Recording Log NE008: 30 Jun 2020

First session for “Through The Turning Years”.

Shot through the window in the door of the storeroom - sound diffusion foam on the left wall, a guitar leaning in the far right corner, loots of non-music-related boxes on the end and right walls.
In the middle of converting the small storeroom into a vocal/recording booth – debating whether to add some hangings to hide the shelving and boxes.

Location: Mill House Studio 2 (don’t laugh, we legitimately have 4 if you count James’ Ableton setup in his bedroom, and 5 if you count the lounge where we record hymns for church!)

Engineer: James Whitaker

Producer: Anne Whitaker

Audio Interface: IK Multimedia iRig Pro Duo

Tracks: “Lisa Lân”

  • fingerstyle acoustic guitar (LAG 200BCE, DADGAD capo 7) – Mike – stereo (Rode NT1 and internal pickup)
  • strummed acoustic guitar (LAG 200BCE, DADGAD capo 7) – Mike – stereo (Rode NT1 and internal pickup)

Production notes:

Recording the guitars in stereo, so any edits affect both the pickup and mic tracks. We’ll split them for mixdown once we’re happy with edits.

Did some work on the recorded guitar tracks using Logic Pro tempo detection and mapping: James was all for recording to a click, but in the end we didn’t (because Mike’s not very good at it!), but used Logic’s features to map the tempo of the recording and then edit together a complete take. Not quite sure how this will pan out as a method yet.
